About this attraction

Süleymaniye Mosque

Crowning Istanbul's Third Hill above the Golden Horn, the Süleymaniye Mosque is the masterpiece of the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, completed in 1557 for Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Many travelers find it more moving than the busier Blue Mosque: a vast, perfectly balanced dome, soft light through stained glass, and a garden terrace with one of the city's finest panoramas — the Golden Horn, Galata Tower, and the Bosphorus beyond. The surrounding külliye once held schools, a hospital, and public kitchens, and the cemetery behind the mosque shelters the türbe (tombs) of Suleiman and his wife Hürrem Sultan. Entry is free, and respectful non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times. SooTransfer takes the friction out of getting there: private transfers from Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) with live flight tracking and a driver holding your name board, then direct drop-off in the old city. The mosque's hilltop lanes are narrow, so your driver brings you as close as vehicle access allows — from there it is a short, atmospheric walk through the historic Süleymaniye quarter to the courtyard gates.

Opening hours
Open to visitors daily, roughly 09:00–18:00, outside the five daily prayer times (entry pauses around each prayer); closed to tourists late Friday morning through Friday midday prayers, reopening around 14:30.

FAQ

Süleymaniye Mosque transfer · frequently asked

Is the Süleymaniye Mosque free to enter?

Yes, entry is completely free, as with all working mosques in Istanbul. Donation boxes are available if you wish to contribute to upkeep.

Can non-Muslim visitors go inside?

Absolutely — visitors of all faiths are welcome outside prayer times, provided they dress modestly and keep quiet inside the prayer hall.

How is Süleymaniye different from the Blue Mosque?

It is larger, older in feel, far less crowded, and comes with a panoramic terrace and the tombs of Suleiman and Hürrem. Many visitors call it the most rewarding mosque visit in Istanbul.

Can a SooTransfer vehicle drop me at the mosque entrance?

The hilltop streets around the complex are narrow and partly restricted, so your driver will drop you at the closest accessible point — usually a short walk from the gates. For hotel-based visits, we can also arrange a private car for a half-day old-city loop.

Which airport is better for reaching the old city?

Both work: Istanbul Airport (IST) is about 50 minutes by road to the Fatih/Süleymaniye area, while Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side with a longer, traffic-dependent crossing. SooTransfer meets you at either arrivals hall with a name board and tracks your flight.
