Tipping in Türkiye is appreciated but never required. Here's exactly what locals expect, when not to bother, and the social etiquette signals around it.
Restaurant
- Casual lokanta: round up (e.g. bill 230 TL → leave 250 TL)
- Mid-range table service: 10% standard
- Fine dining: 10% standard, sometimes 15% for outstanding service
- Fast-food chains: not expected
- In cash on the table is preferred over adding to card
Drinks
- Cafe coffee: round up to nearest 5 TL
- Cocktail bar: 1-2 TL per drink (round)
- Hotel beach bar: round up
- Free çay (Turkish tea) offered after meal: no tip needed, but accepting is polite
Drivers
- SooTransfer chauffeur: 10-15% if happy, never expected
- Yellow taxi: round up, no formal tip culture
- Hotel shuttle: 10-20 TL on the seat as you exit
- Round to nearest €5 if paying in euro
Hotel
- Housekeeping: 50-100 TL at end of stay (on pillow, departure morning)
- Porter: 20-30 TL per bag
- Concierge for a specific favour: 100-200 TL
- Doorman: 10-20 TL when they hail/open
- Room service: 5-10% on the bill or 30 TL flat
Spa, hammam, gym
- 10-15% on the service price
- Hammam attendant: 20% (they do most of the physical work)
- Personal trainer: 30-50 TL per session
Tour guides
- Half-day: 100-200 TL per person
- Full day: 200-400 TL per person
- Specialist guide (private archaeologist, photographer): up to 500 TL/day
- Tipped in cash at the end of the tour, never on the bill
When NOT to tip
- Government services (hospitals, post office)
- Bus drivers / public transport
- Anyone who tried to push extras on you — tip is gratitude, not obligation
