What this trip is, and why it is worth a day

The Alanya pirate-boat cruise is the classic way to meet the city from the water, the only angle from which its great limestone peninsula truly makes sense. Over a relaxed five to six hours a wooden galleon-styled boat rounds the headland beneath the castle, slips past three storied sea caves, and pauses in sheltered coves to swim before reaching Cleopatra Beach. It blends genuine history, striking geology and easy fun, which is why it suits couples, families and first-time visitors alike. The castle peninsula: real history beneath your keel

Alanya's rocky headland has been fortified for over two thousand years, and in the 3rd century BC its hidden harbour sheltered Cilician pirates who raided the eastern Mediterranean. The fortress you see today is largely the work of the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubat I, who took the town in 1221 and made it his winter capital. He ringed the peninsula with walls some 6.5 km long, studded with around 140 towers, and built the cisterns, shipyard and great tower that still crown the rock. The three caves, and what gives them their names

The cave circuit is the heart of the trip. Pirate Cave, Korsanlar Magarasi, takes its name from the corsairs who are said to have stored stolen cargo here before selling it ashore; local lore even claims a secret passage once linked it to the castle above. Phosphorus Cave, Fosforlu Magara, is a true blue grotto: sunlight filtering up through the water throws a shimmering, near-phosphorescent glow across the walls. Lovers Cave, Asiklar Magarasi, carries a tale of a German woman and her Turkish sweetheart said to have sheltered here for three months in 1965.

Cleopatra Beach and its golden-sand legend

The cruise builds toward Cleopatra Beach, the 2 km Blue Flag strand on the peninsula's western flank that begins right by Damlatas Cave. Legend says Mark Antony shipped fine sand here from Egypt as a gift to the queen, though science tells a better story: the pale, sub-millimetre grains are crystalline carbonate that formed locally and are reckoned older than comparable Egyptian sand. The grains are so smooth they barely cling to skin. Removing sand is forbidden, visitors enter barefoot, and the water in high summer hovers around a warm 28 degrees.

What you actually see and do, in order

After your private pickup and a short harbour transfer, you board near the old port and set off around mid-morning. The boat first traces the seaward walls, the Tersane and the Red Tower, then noses up to Pirate, Phosphorus and Lovers caves in turn for photos and the play of light. Between caves come the swimming stops in clear coves, with onboard music and often a foam party for those who want it. Best season and time to go

Boats run daily through the warm half of the year, broadly late April to mid-November; outside that window many operators pause and the coast turns quiet. June and September are the sweet spot, with hot, settled days and slightly thinner crowds than peak July and August. Morning departures around 10:00 give the calmest water and the best cave light, and they let you swim before the midday sun is fiercest. What to wear, bring and know

• Swimwear under light clothing, plus a towel and a change of dry clothes
• Reef-safe high-SPF sunscreen, hat and sunglasses; deck shade is limited

• Motion-sickness tablets if you are sensitive, taken before boarding

The trip is gentle: caves are admired from the boat, there is no canyoning or diving, and swimming is entirely optional with flotation aids provided. That makes it well suited to families with children, couples after an easy romantic outing, and confident as well as nervous swimmers. Travellers with reduced mobility can still enjoy it but should flag this when booking, since harbour boarding and the soft beach involve steps and uneven footing.
