Green Canyon Boat & Manavgat Waterfall

Two faces of the Manavgat River in one day

This tour follows a single river through two completely different moods. High in the Taurus Mountains, the Manavgat River has been dammed to form a long, fjord-like reservoir of astonishing emerald-green water; this is the Green Canyon. Downstream, near the town of Manavgat and the ancient resort of Side, the same river spreads out and crashes over a wide rock shelf as the famous Manavgat Waterfall. The Oymapinar Dam and how the canyon was born

The Green Canyon exists because of the Oymapinar Dam, a soaring concrete arch built across the Manavgat River between 1977 and 1984. Standing 185 metres tall, it was designed by the French engineering firm Coyne et Bellier and constructed by Germany's Bilfinger und Berger, with four underground turbines generating 540 megawatts of hydroelectric power. The reservoir behind it holds around 300 million cubic metres of water. Crucially for visitors, it is widely described as the only dam lake in Turkey open to recreational boat trips, which makes this cruise genuinely unusual.

The water gets its colour and clarity from the geology of the western Taurus. The Manavgat River is fed largely by underground karst springs, so it runs exceptionally clear, cold and free of sediment. Trapped between steep limestone-and-pine walls and reaching depths of around 100 metres in places, the lake reflects the surrounding forest and sky, shifting between jade, turquoise and deep bottle-green as the light changes through the day.

What you see and do, in order

After a door-to-door pickup, you climb the winding mountain road to the boat pier near the dam, roughly 25 kilometres inland from the coast. You board for a relaxed cruise of a couple of hours along the gorge, passing sheer cliffs, hidden inlets and the great curved wall of the dam itself. Midway, the boat moors for a swimming break in the cool, clean water, with time to sunbathe on deck or try lake fishing using tackle provided. A buffet-style lunch is typically served before you cruise back.

The Manavgat Waterfall: wide, low and powerful

Downstream, about three kilometres north of Manavgat town, the river puts on a very different show. The Manavgat Waterfall is not tall, dropping only a few metres, but it is broad, stretching roughly 40 metres across and pouring a huge volume of water in a sheet of white foam over flat rocks. First-time visitors expecting a towering cascade are often surprised, then won over by its sheer force and the cool spray. The setting is lovely too, with shaded tea gardens and riverside restaurants where you can pause over a glass of Turkish tea.

The falls carry real cultural weight. They were depicted on the reverse of Turkey's 5 lira banknotes printed between 1968 and 1983, making this one of the most recognised natural images of the old Turkish lira. Water levels vary with the season; in spring the flow is at its most thunderous, while during major floods the falls can briefly vanish beneath the swollen river entirely.

What to wear, bring and know before you go

Come prepared for sun, water and rock. Bring swimwear, a towel, strong sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, as shade on the open water is limited. Wear comfortable, grippy shoes for the boat deck and the slippery rocks near the falls. The canyon water is genuinely cold even in August, refreshing for a quick swim but not a warm bath, so a light layer for afterwards is wise. There is no demanding hiking, but the riverside paths can be uneven, so take care with footing.
