À propos

Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets, trading since 1461 under Sultan Mehmed II. Beneath its painted vaults, roughly 4,000 shops line more than 60 lanes: gold and jewellery, hand-knotted carpets, mosaic lamps, ceramics, leather and antiques, while historic hans (caravanserais) hide artisan workshops off the main flow. It sits in the heart of Istanbul's old town, beside Nuruosmaniye Mosque and a ten-minute downhill walk from the Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı). From Istanbul Airport (IST) it is roughly 50 km — about 60 minutes in a private SooTransfer car from €52, with a fixed euro price, meet and greet with a name sign, flight tracking and pay on arrival. Book on WhatsApp and start shopping the moment you land.

Horaires
Monday to Saturday, about 08:30–19:00. Closed on Sundays and on the first days of religious holidays (three days at Eid al-Fitr, four at Eid al-Adha). Individual shops set their own hours, and some close a little earlier on quiet winter days.
Entrée
Free — the Grand Bazaar is a public marketplace with no ticket. You pay only for what you buy, and haggling is part of the price: first quotes typically run well above what sellers will actually accept.

FAQ

Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) transfert · FAQ

How much is a private transfer from Istanbul Airport (IST) to the Grand Bazaar?

From €57 fixed for the roughly 50 km, about 60-minute ride into the old town; from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) it is about €60. The euro price is confirmed up front and includes meet and greet with a name sign, flight tracking and free waiting — you pay the driver on arrival, and booking takes minutes on WhatsApp.

Is a private transfer better than a taxi or the tram from the airport?

Public transport from IST means a bus or metro plus a tram change with your luggage — easily over 90 minutes door to door. Street taxis run on the meter, traffic included. A SooTransfer car is a fixed €52, one seamless hour, with your flight tracked, free waiting and free child seats if you need them.

Is the Grand Bazaar open on Sundays?

No — it is closed every Sunday, and also on the first days of religious holidays (three days at Eid al-Fitr, four at Eid al-Adha). Plan your visit Monday to Saturday, roughly 08:30–19:00.

Do I have to pay to enter, and should I really haggle?

Entry is completely free. Haggling, however, is expected: open at about 50–60% of the first quote, stay friendly and take your time — that is how fair prices for carpets, lamps and gold are reached.

Can I go up on the famous Grand Bazaar rooftops?

The rooftops are officially closed for safety. Explore the historic hans (caravanserais) with their courtyards and workshops instead — and right outside are Nuruosmaniye Mosque and the Spice Bazaar, ten minutes downhill.
