Side ou Aspendos — quel théâtre romain visiter ?

Tous deux amphithéâtres romains du IIe siècle, tous deux à une heure d'Antalya. Visites très différentes.

Partager

If you have one day for Roman ruins in Antalya, you choose between Side and Aspendos. Both are 2nd-century AD, both spectacular, both reachable in 60-90 minutes from Antalya. They are very different experiences. Here is how to choose, from someone who has dropped guests at both ~200 times.

Side — the seaside Roman town

A whole ancient city integrated into a modern beach resort. The theatre (15,000 seats) is one part of a sprawling complex — agora, temple of Apollo (seafront columns, Instagram-famous), Roman baths, gymnasium. You walk through the ancient streets — they are still streets, with restaurants and shops mixed in. Half-day visit, very photogenic.

Aspendos — the perfect single theatre

The best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world. Built in 155 AD, acoustics so perfect that classical concerts and opera festivals (Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival, June-September) still use it as an active venue. 12,000-seat capacity. Whisper from the stage reaches the back row. Smaller, more focused visit — 1.5 hours plenty.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Visit length: Side 3-4 hours · Aspendos 1.5-2 hours
  • Crowd level: Side busy (resort town) · Aspendos calmer (rural)
  • Best for: Side = sprawling photo-walk · Aspendos = single jaw-dropping monument
  • Combine with: Side = beach afternoon · Aspendos = Köprülü Canyon (15 min away) or Perge (30 min)
  • From Antalya: Side 80 min · Aspendos 50 min (closer)
  • Entry: Side free outer ruins, €8 theatre + agora · Aspendos €8 single ticket

When the festival is on (Aspendos Opera)

June-September Aspendos hosts the world's longest-running classical festival in a Roman venue. Evening performances 21:00-23:30 — the experience is unforgettable, but: the theatre is not lit during day visits in festival season, so daytime visits feel less dramatic. If you can, attend an evening performance instead. €35-€90 per ticket; we drive guests round-trip in 4 hours.

Our recommendation

First-time visitor with one day: Aspendos in the morning + Köprülü Canyon white-water rafting in the afternoon. Architecture buff: Aspendos. Resort cluster traveller staying near Side: walk the ancient streets after dinner — they are free, lit, and the Apollo temple at sunset is one of the Mediterranean's most photographed sights.
