Kayseri or Nevşehir airport for Cappadocia — which should you fly into?

Cappadocia has two airports: Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), 40 minutes from Göreme, and Kayseri Erkilet (ASR), about an hour away but with far more flights. Here is an honest comparison — and why, with a fixed-price private transfer waiting at either one, the choice matters less than you think.

The short answer

Book whichever flight is cheaper or better timed — that is the whole decision. Both airports serve Cappadocia well, and with a fixed-price private transfer waiting at either one, the difference comes down to €15 and 20 minutes of driving. NAV (Nevşehir) wins on drive time; ASR (Kayseri) wins on flight choice. Neither is a wrong answer.

The two airports at a glance

  • Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV): 40 km / ~40 min to Göreme — a small terminal inside the Cappadocia region itself
  • Kayseri Erkilet (ASR): 72 km / ~60 min to Göreme — a bigger airport in Kayseri city, one province east
  • NAV flights: almost all Istanbul — Turkish Airlines from IST and AJet from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), roughly 6-9 departures a day
  • ASR flights: Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet from both Istanbul airports, plus other domestic routes and seasonal international flights
  • Both are small, calm airports — from touchdown to the arrivals hall rarely takes more than 15-20 minutes

Flights: ASR wins on choice and price

Kayseri sees roughly twice as much traffic as Nevşehir. Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul (IST) several times a day, and low-cost competition from Pegasus and AJet — from both IST and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) — keeps fares down; in season there are also direct international flights, mainly from Germany and the Gulf. Nevşehir is served mostly by Turkish Airlines from IST and AJet from SAW, around 6-9 flights a day. If you are hunting the cheapest fare or the most convenient time slot, you will usually find it at ASR.

Transfers: NAV wins on distance and price

  • NAV → Göreme: 40 km, ~40 min, private transfer from €40
  • NAV → Uçhisar: 38 km, from €40
  • NAV → Ürgüp: 50 km, from €41
  • NAV → Avanos: 55 km, from €43
  • ASR → Göreme: 72 km, ~60 min, from €55
  • ASR → Ürgüp: 62 km, from €55
  • ASR → Avanos: 60 km, from €55
  • ASR → Uçhisar: 78 km, from €58
  • All prices are fixed per vehicle (not per person) and include meet & greet, flight tracking and free waiting

How to decide: do the maths on the whole trip

The transfer difference between the airports is about €15 per vehicle — not per person. So if ASR fares are €10-15 per person cheaper, a couple already comes out ahead flying into Kayseri, and a family of four saves serious money. Flip it around: if NAV happens to have a similar fare at a better time, take it and enjoy the 40-minute drive. The one timing factor genuinely worth weighing is the hot-air balloons — pickups run around 4:30-5:00 in the morning, so a flight landing at midnight plus a 60-minute drive from ASR leaves you very little sleep before the basket.

💡 Booking order matters: lock in the flight first, then the transfer. Our transfers are fixed-price with flight tracking, free waiting and pay on arrival — so a delayed or rescheduled flight costs you nothing. Send your flight number on WhatsApp and the driver adjusts automatically.

No private transfer? Shuttles and public transport

Shared shuttle vans operate from both airports at roughly €10-15 per person, but they wait for passengers from several flights and then do hotel-by-hotel drop-offs — plan on 1.5-2 hours to reach Göreme. Real public transport only exists on the Kayseri side: a city bus into town, an intercity coach to Nevşehir, then a local minibus to your village — 3 hours or more with luggage. From NAV there is no scheduled public bus into the villages at all. Fine for light-packing backpackers on daytime flights; a bad idea after a night flight or before a dawn balloon slot.
