Konak Square & Kemeraltı Bazaar

Konak Square is İzmir's heart: the ornate Ottoman Clock Tower of 1901 — the city's symbol — the tiny tiled Yalı Mosque, and behind them Kemeraltı, one of the oldest and largest open-air bazaars in the Mediterranean. Its labyrinth of covered lanes runs from Konak all the way to the ancient Agora of Smyrna: coffee courtyards like the 1744 Kızlarağası Hanı caravanserai, a historic synagogues quarter, and street food from flaky boyoz to the kumru sandwich. The Kordon waterfront promenade starts a few minutes' walk away. İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is just 18 km away — about 25 minutes by car — and SooTransfer takes you door-to-door from €40, with meet and greet, flight tracking, free waiting time and free child seats included.

Godziny otwarcia

Wejście
Free — the square, Clock Tower (exterior), Yalı Mosque and the bazaar lanes cost nothing. The Agora of Smyrna charges a small entry fee of roughly €3–6; mosque visits are free outside prayer times.

Atrakcje Konak Square & Kemeraltı Bazaar

🕰
Ottoman Clock Tower
Built in 1901 for the 25th year of Sultan Abdülhamid II's reign to a design by Raymond Charles Père, the ornate 25 m tower is İzmir's symbol — the clock itself was a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II. The tiny tiled 18th-century Yalı Mosque stands right beside it.
🧿
The Kemeraltı labyrinth
One of the oldest and largest open-air bazaars in the Mediterranean: covered lanes of gold, leather, spices, dried figs and wedding dresses, winding from Konak up to the Agora.
Kahve at Kızlarağası Hanı
In this 1744 caravanserai, Turkish coffee is still brewed over embers. Sit in the courtyard, then browse the craft shops on the gallery above — the most atmospheric corner of the bazaar.
🏛
Agora of Smyrna
At the bazaar's upper edge lies the Roman agora, rebuilt under Marcus Aurelius after the earthquake of 178 AD — arched basilica galleries and ancient water channels in the middle of the modern city.
🕍
The synagogues quarter
Around Havra Sokağı survives a rare cluster of historic synagogues from İzmir's Sephardic community, settled here after 1492 — several have been restored and can be visited.
🥯
Boyoz & kumru
İzmir's street-food icons: flaky boyoz pastry with çay for breakfast and the toasted kumru sandwich — buy wherever the locals are queuing.

Triki dla Konak Square & Kemeraltı Bazaar

🚐
Wait-and-return with SooTransfer
Kemeraltı is no place to drag suitcases. On a layover or before a cruise, book a wait-and-return: your driver minds your luggage in the car while you explore, then runs you back to ADB or on to your hotel — message us on WhatsApp for a quote.
🗺
Don't fear the maze
GPS struggles under the covered lanes. Navigate by landmarks instead — the Clock Tower, Hisar Mosque and Kızlarağası Hanı — and remember that downhill always leads back towards Konak and the sea.
💶
Cash and haggling
Small stalls prefer Turkish lira in cash; bigger shops take cards. Friendly haggling is expected for leather, jewellery and souvenirs — never at food stalls.
🌅
Finish on the Kordon
When the bazaar winds down around 19:00, walk a few minutes to the Kordon waterfront promenade — sunset over the Gulf of İzmir is the best free show in the city, with seafront cafés for dinner.

FAQ

Konak Square & Kemeraltı Bazaar transfer · FAQ

How much is a private transfer from İzmir Airport to Konak Square and Kemeraltı?

From €40 one-way with SooTransfer — a private Eco Van for up to 6 guests and 6 bags, fixed price in EUR, paid on arrival. The drive is about 18 km and takes around 25 minutes. Meet and greet with a name sign, flight tracking, free waiting time and free child seats are all included.

Is a private transfer better than the İZBAN train, metro or a taxi?

Public transport is cheap but not direct: you take the İZBAN commuter train from the airport, then change to the metro or tram to reach Konak — usually 45–60 minutes with luggage, plus an İzmirim Kart to buy first. Metered taxis depend on traffic, so the fare is only known at the end. A private transfer is door-to-door in about 25 minutes at a fixed €40 — easiest with bags, kids or an early flight.

Is Kemeraltı open on Sundays?

Most shops trade Monday to Saturday, roughly 09:00–19:00, and the majority close on Sunday — though cafés, some eateries, the square itself and the Kordon are always open. If shopping is the goal, come on a weekday; Saturdays are the most crowded.

How much time should I plan for Konak Square and Kemeraltı?

Two to three hours covers the Clock Tower, a loop through the bazaar and a Turkish coffee at Kızlarağası Hanı. Add about an hour for the Agora of Smyrna — and more if you want to graze the street food along Havra Sokağı or end with a sunset walk on the Kordon.

Can I visit Kemeraltı on a layover at İzmir Airport?

Yes — with only a 25-minute drive each way, a layover of five hours or more comfortably allows two to three hours in the bazaar. Book a SooTransfer wait-and-return: your driver keeps your luggage safe in the car and takes you straight back to ADB. Cruise guests docking in İzmir can book the same round trip from the port.
