Kekova Sea Kayak — Over the Sunken City

A city the sea kept instead of erased

Most ruins you walk through; Kekova's you float over. Off the north shore of Kekova Island lie the partly submerged remains of Dolichiste, a Lycian and later Byzantine town whose lower streets slid beneath the Mediterranean after earthquakes in the 2nd century AD dropped the coastline by one to three metres. Because no one ever built on top of it and the protected water stays glass-clear, you can sit in a kayak and look straight down at staircases, doorways, house walls and harbour foundations resting a metre or two below your hull. It is one of the best-preserved underwater archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, and a sea kayak is the quietest, lowest, closest way to see it.

The history under your paddle

The whole Kekova basin was a corner of ancient Lycia. The mainland village of Ucagiz was Teimioussa (Theimussa); the hilltop hamlet of Kalekoy was Simena, a small member of the Lycian League alongside Aperlae and Apollonia, with inscriptions dating its life back to the 4th century BC. Earthquakes in the 2nd century AD sank part of Dolichiste; the town was rebuilt in Byzantine times before Arab raids finally emptied it. The region has been a Specially Protected Area since 18 January 1990, which is why swimming and diving are banned directly over the sunken city, keeping the ruins and the water that pristine.

What you actually see and do, in order

After your private transfer reaches Ucagiz, you meet the kayak guide for a safety briefing and a short warm-up paddle in the sheltered harbour to get comfortable. The group then sets out toward Kekova Island. A typical morning runs roughly four hours on the water with a motorised support boat alongside, pausing for a swim in Tersane Bay, drifting slowly over the Sunken City, and landing below Simena for the climb to the castle before paddling back past the famous tombs.

The climb up through Kalekoy is short but steep, past Lycian sarcophagi scattered among the houses and gardens. The castle crowning the village was built in the Middle Ages, partly by the Knights of Rhodes, on far older Lycian foundations. Inside its walls is something rare: a theatre carved entirely out of the bedrock, with about seven rows of seats for roughly 300 spectators, the smallest in all of Lycia. From the battlements you get the definitive Kekova view, the strait, the island, the tomb standing in the water and your own kayaks far below.

Best season, best time of day

Kekova kayaks best from spring through autumn. May and June bring water around 20 to 24°C and calm, comfortable mornings; September and October are warm and quieter than peak summer. July and August are hot and busy, with sea temperatures climbing toward the high 20s by late August. The decisive factor is the wind: the northerly Meltem tends to build through the afternoon, so mornings are almost always calmer and clearer. That is why launches are timed early, and why a private start lets us beat both the chop and the day-boat traffic.

What to wear, bring and the rules

This is an active half-day in strong sun on open water. Dress for getting wet, protect your skin, and pack anything fragile in a dry bag, because spray and the occasional splash are part of the fun.

• Swimwear under quick-dry clothes, plus a long-sleeve rash top for sun protection
• Hat, sunglasses on a strap, reef-safe sunscreen and a towel
• Water shoes or strapped sandals; a dry bag for phone, keys and camera
• Drinking water (we keep extra cold in the car) and any personal medication
• No swimming or diving over the Sunken City; the ruins must not be touched or removed

Who it suits

Stable sit-on-top kayaks and a shadowing support boat make this friendlier than it sounds. Couples get a quiet, photogenic morning; active families do well with children from about age six sharing a double with a parent; first-time paddlers manage comfortably because the route hugs sheltered water. It is less ideal for anyone with significant mobility limits, since the castle climb is steep and the launch involves a wet entry. If the kayak isn't for you, the same coast can be seen on a calmer private boat day, and we are happy to arrange that instead.

Why we run it as a private day

Ucagiz is a small harbour at the end of a winding road, and the experience lives or dies on timing. Travelling privately means we leave your hotel when conditions are best, not when a coach is full, reaching the launch while the water is mirror-flat and the ruins are sharpest. Your driver-guide minds your bags, lunch and dry clothes through the whole paddle, then has the cool, clean Mercedes waiting at the quay. After four hours on the water and a castle climb, that door-to-door comfort is the part you remember on the drive home.
