What this day is, and why it is worth it

Ölüdeniz sits where pine-covered mountains drop straight into the Mediterranean, and the best of its coast is only reachable by water. This is a full-day boat trip that strings together the region's headline bays, Butterfly Valley with its tiger butterflies and hidden waterfall, the glowing Blue Cave, and St Nicholas Island where five Byzantine churches cling to the hillside. Between them sit calm coves for swimming. We add the part most operators skip: a private Mercedes that collects you at your hotel and brings you home, so the only thing you organise is your swimwear.

Butterfly Valley: a canyon, a waterfall and the Jersey tiger

Kelebekler Vadisi is a steep gorge running roughly three kilometres inland from a sand-and-shingle beach, its walls rising some 350 metres on either side beneath Babadağ, the 1,975-metre mountain behind Ölüdeniz. A stream fed by a spring in the cliff-top village of Faralya runs down to the sea, feeding two small waterfalls that flow year-round. The valley was declared a first-degree protected natural site on 8 February 1995, which is why there are no hotels here, just a low-key beach camp and wild greenery.

The valley takes its name from its most famous resident, the Jersey tiger butterfly (Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis), whose cream-striped forewings hide flashes of orange-red. It is far from alone: surveys have recorded around 105 butterfly species from 15 families here, alongside 147 plant species. The butterflies are most visible from June through September, when warm air and the freshwater stream draw them in clouds along the gorge.

St Nicholas Island and the original Santa Claus

Gemiler Island, marked on tour boards as St Nicholas Island, is one of the eastern Mediterranean's richest early-Christian sites. Between the 4th and 6th centuries AD it grew into an organised place of pilgrimage for ships sailing to the Holy Land, who put in to take on water and pray. Five Byzantine churches survive, linked by a remarkable 350-metre covered processional walkway, along with the remains of dozens of ecclesiastical buildings and more than fifty tombs cut into the rock.

Archaeologists believe this was the original burial place of Saint Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop whose generosity became the Santa Claus legend, before his relics were moved east to Myra around the 650s when Arab naval raids forced the island's abandonment. Going ashore here, you climb past terraces and ruined apses for one of the finest views on the whole coast.

The Blue Cave, the Blue Lagoon and the swim stops

The Blue Cave is a large sea cave bitten into the limestone cliffs. When the water is calm, the boat noses close and you can swim inside, where sunlight refracting through the entrance turns the whole pool an electric turquoise. The famous Blue Lagoon itself lies within Ölüdeniz Nature Park, whose shallow, sheltered water is protected, so boats run from the main Belceğiz beach rather than inside the lagoon, then head out to the clearer, deeper water offshore where snorkelling is best.

Best time to go and how the day flows

Boat days generally cast off around 10:00 and return near 17:00, giving roughly seven hours on the water with three or so swimming halts. We time your private pickup to that, typically 30 to 45 minutes before departure. For the kindest weather, aim for May, June, September or October: the sea is warm, the light is gentle and the bays are far less crowded than in the July and August peak, when temperatures soar and every deck is full. Mornings are usually calmest, which matters for swimming inside the Blue Cave.

What to wear, bring and know

This is a sun-and-sea day, so plan for both. The deck is exposed and the Turkish midday sun is fierce, while a shore visit to any chapel or mosque on your travels calls for covered shoulders and knees out of respect.

• Swimwear worn under light clothing, plus a towel and a change of clothes
• Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, reapplied after each swim
• Sturdy sandals or trainers if you intend to walk in Butterfly Valley
• A dry bag for phones and a little cash for drinks or souvenirs
• A light cover-up or sarong for sun breaks and any chapel visit

Who it suits

The boat day suits almost everyone: couples after a slow, scenic day, families with children who will love the swim stops, and older travellers who can relax on a shaded deck while others snorkel. Non-swimmers are perfectly comfortable aboard. The one caveat is the Butterfly Valley waterfall trail, which is steep and partly roped and best left to sure-footed adults; the beach and stream are easy for all. With a private car and driver-guide bookending the day, mobility-limited guests avoid coach steps and long walks to the harbour entirely.
