Perched on a tiny islet where the Bosphorus meets the Sea of Marmara, the Maiden's Tower is one of Istanbul's most beloved silhouettes. A watchtower has stood here since antiquity — Byzantine emperors chained the strait from it, Ottomans used it as a lighthouse and quarantine station — and the legends attached to it, from the emperor's daughter and the fateful snake to Leander swimming the strait, are told to every Istanbul child. Fully restored and reopened in 2023, the tower now houses a small museum with exhibits on its 2,500-year story, plus a viewing balcony with a one-of-a-kind perspective: the entire old-city skyline across the water on one side, Üsküdar's minarets on the other. Access is by shuttle boat from the Salacak shore in Üsküdar, itself a lovely waterfront promenade. How do I get to the Maiden's Tower from the airport?
SooTransfer drives you from IST or SAW directly to the Salacak pier in Üsküdar, where shuttle boats leave about every 15 minutes. Your driver tracks your flight and meets you with a name sign; from SAW there is no Bosphorus crossing at all.
Can you visit the inside of the tower?
Yes — since the 2023 restoration the tower is open as a museum with exhibition floors and a viewing balcony. Allow about an hour to an hour and a half including the boat ride.
Is there a restaurant on the island?
The islet has a small café service, but it is no longer the full restaurant of years past — most visitors come for the museum and the view, then eat along the Üsküdar or Karaköy waterfront.
Which boat departure point is best?
Üsküdar-Salacak is the closest and most frequent. Boats also run from Karaköy and Kabataş at set times, handy if you are staying around Beyoğlu — your SooTransfer driver can drop you at whichever pier suits your day.
