Ortaköy Mosque & Square

Ortaköy Mosque — officially the Grand Mecidiye Mosque — is Istanbul's most photographed waterfront landmark: a lace-like Neo-Baroque jewel completed in the 1850s for Sultan Abdülmecid I by architects of the celebrated Balyan family. It stands right at the water's edge with the Bosphorus Bridge soaring behind it, and the mosque-and-bridge shot at sunset is one of the city's signature images. Inside, tall windows flood the prayer hall with light reflected off the strait; outside, Ortaköy's cobbled square buzzes with cafés, a weekend craft market and the neighborhood's famous kumpir (loaded baked potato) stalls. Entry is free and visitors are welcome outside prayer times. The mosque sits on the Beşiktaş shoreline, roughly 42 km by road from Istanbul Airport (IST). With SooTransfer, a private driver meets you at arrivals holding a name board, tracks your flight so delays are never a problem, and brings you door-to-door to the Bosphorus — no metro changes or taxi haggling. Landing at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side? We cover those crossings over the bridge too.

Horaires
Open daily, roughly 09:00 to 18:00, outside the five daily prayer times; closed to sightseeing visitors during prayers and around Friday midday prayers. Prayer times shift through the year — check the day's schedule.
