The building took its present form between the 11th and 14th centuries, and its golden scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin, crowned by the luminous Anastasis fresco in the funerary chapel, were created around 1316–1321 under the statesman Theodore Metochites. Reopened in 2024 after a long restoration, Chora now serves as a working mosque while welcoming sightseers outside prayer times.
