Cappadocia hot-air balloon — insider safety + booking tips

Five years of driving guests to the launch field. What to ask, what to skip, and the one weather habit nobody tells you.

Share

Cappadocia operates the world's largest balloon fleet — and one of its safest. The reason is strict morning go/no-go calls. Here is what guests should actually verify before paying.

The two flight slots

First slot launches 30 minutes before sunrise (the iconic photo). Second slot launches 45 minutes later if winds hold. Book the first — the photos are unmatched and second-slot cancellations are far more frequent.

Verify the operator's TÜRSAB + DGCA licences

A legitimate Cappadocia balloon operator holds (1) a TÜRSAB travel-agency licence and (2) a Turkish Civil Aviation (DGCA) commercial-balloon licence. Ask to see both — every honest operator emails them on request.

Refund policy on cancellation

Industry standard is 100% refund if the operator cancels for weather. If a contract says "70%" or "credit toward future flight" — pick another operator.

The one weather rule nobody tells you

If wind reads above 12 km/h at 06:00 the day before, the next-morning flight is borderline. Move your slot one day earlier if your itinerary allows.

Insurance

Standard travel insurance covers balloon flights operated by a licensed agency. Verify your policy lists "aviation" not just "general transit".
