Pamukkale day trip from Antalya — every shortcut we know

Six hours of driving for two hours on the terraces. How to get the most out of the day without rushing.

Share

Pamukkale is far. The drive is most of the day. Done right it is one of Turkey's great experiences; done wrong it is a coach-bus death-march. Here is how we run it.

Leave by 06:30

Most coach tours start at 04:00 to "beat the crowds" and arrive at 09:00 stewed. We start at 06:30 in a Mercedes you can sleep in, arrive 10:30, and the day-tripper coaches have left by 14:00.

Park at the southern gate

There are three entrances. The southern gate has a covered walk down to the terraces — kinder on knees, cooler in summer. Most coach tours dump at the much-longer northern entrance.

The Cleopatra Pool decision

Worth it once if you have never swum among Roman columns. Skip it if you have done it before — the 30 minutes is better spent at Hierapolis necropolis.

Lunch in Karahayıt

4 km north — a working town the coaches mostly skip. Family-run restaurants serve gözleme and grilled trout for half the on-site cafeteria price.

Stop at a Denizli winery on the way back

Likya Winery is on the route — Anatolian grapes, no commission shop, tastings of 6 wines for under €10.
