Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi)

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) is the Lycian coast at its wildest: a canyon mouth south of Ölüdeniz where cliffs of around 350 m plunge straight into a turquoise cove, named for the Jersey tiger butterflies that gather here, especially from June to September. As a first-degree protected nature reserve it has no permanent buildings — just a rustic beach bar and campsite — and no road: you arrive by taxi boat from Ölüdeniz in about 30–40 minutes or on the beach-boat day trips that anchor here, while a waterfall hides at the valley's back. The gateway is Ölüdeniz, about 65 km from Dalaman Airport (DLM) — roughly 70 minutes by road — and a private SooTransfer starts at €55 in a six-seat Eco Van, fixed price quoted up front, pay after the ride.

Açılış saatleri
There are no gates or set opening hours — the boats set the schedule. In season (roughly May–October) taxi boats leave Ölüdeniz from about 10:00, with the last returns around 17:00, and most beach-boat day trips call in late morning or early afternoon. The simple camp at the beach operates roughly March to November; in winter boats are rare and the valley is effectively out of reach for day visitors.
Giriş ücreti
The beach itself has no entrance ticket — the boat is the real cost. A return taxi-boat ride from Ölüdeniz cost around 700 TL (roughly €15) per person in the 2025 season, paid in lira at the boat cooperative on the beach, while Ölüdeniz and Fethiye day-trip boats include the stop in their overall tour price. Rates change with the lira, so check on the day.

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) öne çıkanları

🦋
Jersey tiger butterflies
The valley's namesakes flash orange as they rise from the shady greenery at the back of the gorge — most numerous from June to September. Move slowly and quietly and you may see clouds of them.
A 350 m cliff amphitheatre
Sheer rock walls close around the cove on three sides; arriving by sea, the canyon mouth opens like a lost world. Arguably the most dramatic beach setting on the whole Turkish coast.
🚤
Arrival by sea
No road reaches the beach. Taxi boats cross from Ölüdeniz in about 30–40 minutes, and nearly every Ölüdeniz beach-boat day trip drops anchor here for a swim stop.
💧
The hidden waterfall
An easy path leads from the beach through the valley floor to a waterfall at the back — fullest in spring, sometimes a mere trickle by late summer. Wear shoes with grip.
🏝
Protected and unspoiled
First-degree nature-reserve status means no hotels, no concrete, no beach clubs — just a basic beach bar, a simple camp and 350 m of cliff between you and the modern world.
🌊
Swimming and snorkelling
Deep, glass-clear water right off the pebble-and-sand beach; day-trip boats usually pair the stop with the Blue Cave and the coves of St Nicholas Island nearby.
Pratik ipuçları

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) için yolculuk püf noktaları

🚤
Take the first boat out
Taxi boats from Ölüdeniz start around 10:00. Ride the first one and you'll have an hour or two of near-empty beach before the day-trip fleet arrives towards midday.
🥾
Don't attempt the Faralya path
The climbers' trail down from Faralya village is dangerously steep, with fixed ropes on loose rock, and serious accidents happen. Unless you're an experienced scrambler, take the boat — the view from the water is better anyway.
🚐
Base yourself in Ölüdeniz
A private SooTransfer from Dalaman Airport to Ölüdeniz costs from €55 (Fethiye €55, Hisarönü/Ovacık €55) — fixed price, name sign at arrivals, free child seats, and a Vito (+€10) or V-Class (+€15) if you travel with bulky luggage. Your driver can also wait and return for a same-day combo.
💶
Pack like there are no shops
Because there are none: bring cash for the boat and beach bar, plenty of water, sun cream and water shoes. There is shade in the valley but almost none on the beach.

SSS

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) transfer · sık sorulan

How do I get to Butterfly Valley from Dalaman Airport, and how much does the transfer cost?

Take a private SooTransfer from Dalaman Airport (DLM) to Ölüdeniz — about 65 km, roughly 70 minutes, from €55 in a six-seat Eco Van. The euro price is fixed and quoted up front, with meet and greet at arrivals with a name sign, flight tracking and free waiting; you pay after the ride. From Ölüdeniz beach, taxi boats make the 30–40 minute crossing to the valley.

Is a private transfer better than a taxi or shuttle bus to Ölüdeniz?

For most visitors, yes. Airport shuttles only reach Fethiye and then mean a dolmuş change with your luggage; a metered taxi over 65 km is unpredictable and usually costs more than our fixed €55; and no train or tram serves Ölüdeniz at all. A private transfer is door-to-door on your schedule, and the same driver can handle a wait-and-return day trip.

Can I reach Butterfly Valley by car or on foot instead of by boat?

No road reaches the beach — the valley is a protected reserve. The only land route is the steep climbers' path from Faralya village above, with fixed ropes on loose, exposed rock; serious accidents, including fatalities, have occurred. It is not for casual visitors — virtually everyone arrives by boat from Ölüdeniz.

When can I actually see the butterflies?

The Jersey tiger butterflies the valley is named for appear mainly from June to September, gathering in the cool, damp, shaded back of the valley near the waterfall. Walk in slowly and quietly from the beach — mornings, before the tour boats land, give you the best chance.

Can I stay overnight in Butterfly Valley?

Only very simply. As a first-degree protected site the valley has no permanent buildings — just a basic camp with tents and simple shelters plus a beach bar, generally operating from about March to November. Book ahead in summer. Most visitors come for the day by boat and sleep in comfort in Ölüdeniz or Fethiye instead.
