Dolmabahçe is the palace the Ottoman Empire built when it looked west: 285 rooms of marble, Baccarat crystal and gold leaf stretched along 600 metres of Bosphorus waterfront in Beşiktaş. The Ceremonial Hall's 4.5-tonne chandelier — a gift from Queen Victoria — hangs beneath one of Europe's largest domed interiors, and Atatürk spent his final days here in a modest room with the clock stopped at 09:05. It is Istanbul's second unmissable palace after Topkapı and pairs naturally with a Bosphorus cruise from the quay next door.
