Rumeli Fortress (Rumeli Hisarı)

Rumeli Hisarı is the fortress Sultan Mehmed II raised in just four months in 1452, gripping the European shore at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus — barely 660 meters of water separate it from Anadolu Hisarı on the opposite bank. Built to blockade Constantinople ahead of the 1453 conquest and nicknamed Boğazkesen, the "strait-cutter", its three great towers and crenellated walls now cascade down a green hillside beneath the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, making it one of Istanbul's most photogenic historical sites. Inside, ramparts, garden paths and an open-air amphitheatre reward visitors with sweeping views over the busiest bend of the strait. The fortress sits in Sarıyer, about 40 km by road from Istanbul Airport (IST). SooTransfer makes the trip effortless: a private vehicle and professional driver meet you in arrivals with a name board, your flight is tracked so delays never cost you your ride, and you travel door-to-door — ideal for pairing Rumeli Hisarı with Emirgan Park or a Bosphorus cruise on the same day.

SSS

Rumeli Fortress (Rumeli Hisarı) transfer · sık sorulan

Is Rumeli Hisarı open every day?

No — it is closed on Mondays. On other days it opens at 09:00, with last tickets sold roughly an hour before closing; closing time changes with the season, so check official channels before visiting.

How long does a visit take?

Most visitors spend 1 to 1.5 hours exploring the towers, ramparts and gardens. Add more time if you want to photograph the Bosphorus views at leisure.

Is the fortress suitable for young children or visitors with limited mobility?

Partially. The lower courtyard and gardens are easy to enjoy, but the stairways and wall walks are steep and uneven with few railings, so the upper sections require sure footing.

How do I get to Rumeli Hisarı from Istanbul Airport?

SooTransfer runs private transfers from IST — about 40 km and 50 minutes by road. Your driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight, and drops you right by the fortress gate or your hotel. Book online or via WhatsApp in minutes.

Can my driver wait while I visit, or add other stops?

Yes. Many guests book SooTransfer for a Bosphorus-shore day, combining Rumeli Hisarı with Emirgan Park, Bebek and Ortaköy — tell us your plan when booking and we'll arrange the route and waiting time.
